Temporary fix for Google Reader in Saudi Arabia

June 3, 2010  |  Web Sites & Services  |  1 Comment

For the last 2 weeks Google Reader hasn’t been working properly. You try to view the items but it just never syncs, anything you read will immediately be marked “unread” again.

Based on the many comments on Twitter I can only conclude one cause: STC. But I guess they don’t care about their customers or they should have fixed it already.

The possible solutions are: 1) Visit the secure https version of Google Reader. 2) Use a Google reader client instead of a web browser. 3) Change your DNS.

I hope that STC will fix this issue as soon as possible.

Latest Telco Tech: Team Logo on Modem

March 14, 2010  |  News  |  No Comments

This is the latest innovation in the field of Mobile Internet telecommunications: print your team flag on it! That’s what STC and Mobily think is a good idea.

Here’s the STC “Quicknet“, sounds a lot like Quakenet.

And Mobily’s “Connect AL-Zaeeem” for Hilal, that’s too many eees.

My advice to the 2 companies: Mobily, just make sure you have enough iPhone 3GS in stock and STC, improve your DSL lines and allow me to use BeejiveIM, open these ports!

Google isn’t working for some STC subscribers (update: might be DNS)

February 16, 2010  |  Saudi Internet  |  8 Comments

Update: More people are having problems (here and here). The problem is apparently caused by using any external DNS (Google DNS for example). This is very weird.

This is not surprising. Some STC customers (including me, Muneeb in Dhahran and Abdullah in Riyadh) are having problems accessing Google. This appears to be random because others told me that it’s working properly.

This is not only effecting searches but Google Reader, Google Analytics, Youtube and other services! This is the error message by the way:

Network Error (tcp_error)

A communication error occurred: “Operation timed out”
The Web Server may be down, too busy, or experiencing other problems preventing it from responding to requests. You may wish to try again at a later time.

For assistance, contact your network support team.

Please, STC: fix your servers already.

STC/Mobily/Zain 3G Band

January 1, 2010  |  General  |  2 Comments

I am about to purchase a Novatel MiFi 2352 or 2372. The MiFi shares a 3G data connection as a wireless access point and it’s battery powered. The difference between the 2 models is this:

MiFi 2352 uses the following bands: Tri-band HSUPA/HSDPA 900/1900/2100 MHz and Quad-band GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz. The MiFi 2372 however is: Tri-band HSUPA/HSDPA 850/1900/2100 MHz and Quad-band GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz.

According to this page: STC, Mobily and Zain all use the 2100MHz band for 3G.

Extremely slow STC Internet speed

October 14, 2009  |  Saudi Internet  |  18 Comments

Update: a friend forwarded this to me “We would like to inform you that the Internet service has been restored. According to the ISP, the problem was in the IGW which caused slowness in internet browsing”. IGW is managed by STC apparently.

Everyone (at least in Riyadh) is complaining about extremely slow Internet connection (twitter links: 1, 2, 3, 4).

I noticed it as well, here is my speedtest.net results with STC’s server:

Of course it takes full advantage of my DSL bandwidth. It’s like running a speed test on a local Intranet.

However try a US based speedtest server and you get:

Very slow, it’s taking me an hour to upload 1MB via FTP! Do you have similar problems? Please share below.

Check flight stats via SMS using Qanawati

October 11, 2009  |  Web Sites & Services  |  No Comments

Qanawati (my channels) is a new service from Saudi Arabia based company Remal IT. The service allows you to check your flight reservations status via SMS.

You can check for available flight reservations on the following airlines: Saudi Airlines, Nas air and Sama. You can also check for reservations on all airlines using IATA, check the status by flight number and check the arrival/departure activity in Saudi airports.

The service is charged by each individual SMS message. Currently only works with Mobily and Zain cell networks. STC is “coming soon”.
