Buy the MacBook Pro in Saudi Arabia or online?

SaudiMac has a price list of the new MacBook Pro models. But should you buy them from Saudi Arabia or just buy them online from Amazon.

Quick overview on your Apple choices in Saudi Arabia: stores “authorized” by Arab Computers stores and “independant” stores (itechia, ADAM, apparently Global Store and others). AC Macs appear to be European based on the power adapter while the others import from the United States.

The other choice as I said earlier is to buy from Amazon then ship using MyUS or similar services. You should assume paying for shipping as well as paying the Saudi Arabia custom fee (%5 if you are lucky, they once considered my 3rd gen iPod a computer!). You will need to add Arabic letters yourself and warranty is a bit sketchy.

Here are the prices for the MacBook Pro models from Apple compared to the Saudi Arabia prices, assuming a convert rate of $1 = 3.80SR. Remember that you need to add shipping and custom fees:

MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.26GHz: on Amazon: 4,405SR. Here: 5,649SR.

MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.53GHz: on Amazon: 5,677SR. Here: 6,899SR.

MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.53GHz: on Amazon: 6,480SR. Here: 8,399SR.

MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.66GHz: on Amazon: 7,480SR. Here: not available.

MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.80GHz: on Amazon: 9,268SR. Here: 10,199SR.

MacBook Pro 17-inch 2.80GHz: on Amazon: 9,344SR. Here: 11,299SR.

  1. This why we need Apple Store, 20% margin is to high for already over priced products.

Let me just clarify something Riyed, you calculated 20% margin taken into consideration that Amazon’s price is the Vendor price (which is not true), just imagine how much the real margin is, given the fact that they tend to get an even more discount for purchasing and shipping on large quanitities from apple. My estimate is that they make atleast 35% NET including sales commission and other (direct) costs.

Pure rip offs, thats why I tend to buy my stuff from amazon (clothes, electronics, etc.) so I could save up alot of portion and teach those swins a lesson.

  2. Hi,
I just got mine (MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.53GHz) this weekend in Riyadh for 6990. I really did not want to risk the illuminating keyboard with the arabic engraving, so i got the official A/E keyboard. In addition to the fact that I noted Amazon price increased from the attractive price of USD 1499 to USD $1,699 which makes the difference between the local price and amazon almost equals the shipping the engraving.

yeah, it’s the difference in shipping + custom + tax + Arabic letters that make the difference.

  3. If we pick the “MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.53GHz” model which has a huge margin compared to local price adding ~350 S.R shipping +570 tax (if applied) + 0 shipping within the US (assuming free shipping) that’s = 7670 S.R (Amazon’s price at this moment is 6750 S.R using $1 = 3.75 S.R.

I doubt the custom would charge on a single laptop, however i never ordered one. But if I’d buy a new model, I’d definitely buy it online and save almost 700 S.R :P

I ordered once a Blu-ray player from amazon and they didnt charge a thing, the regulation clearly mentions that if you brought in 3 or more (correct me if im wrong) of the same items, you will get hit by customs, otherwise its considered a personal use and you can get a waiver if a charge was inflicted, though the process is hectic, it is doable since the Benjamins haven’t yet been credited to MOF account.

    Actually, custom is very random!

I got it from Aramex already opened :(

  5. I have experienced this thing in Saudi Arabia that the conversion rate of SR 3.75 to 1.0 USD is never realized. In most of the cases it is more like 5:1. It seems that the dealers take advantage of comparatively less competition to fleece the customers. Instead of buying online, it will be more prudent to ask any of your friend or realtive to bring it from abroad.
