Update: a friend forwarded this to me “We would like to inform you that the Internet service has been restored. According to the ISP, the problem was in the IGW which caused slowness in internet browsing”. IGW is managed by STC apparently.
Everyone (at least in Riyadh) is complaining about extremely slow Internet connection (twitter links: 1, 2, 3, 4).
I noticed it as well, here is my speedtest.net results with STC’s server:
Of course it takes full advantage of my DSL bandwidth. It’s like running a speed test on a local Intranet.
However try a US based speedtest server and you get:
Very slow, it’s taking me an hour to upload 1MB via FTP! Do you have similar problems? Please share below.

I use the jood plus. Now you are right it is unacceptably slow, to get to the US. Which is why I search for french mirrors as the speed is much quicker. The upload is pathetic though.

since yesterday (Oct. 27) i dont have connection over my sawa broadband sim card using a USB modem. i tried also checking over my smartphone with no avail for jawalnet 3g. i think there’s something wrong within STC network… until now i couldnt get online… what seems to be the problem anyway… im living at Jubail Eastern province…

I’m using sawa sim with unlimited jawalnet package and experiencing extremely poor service. I got it activated on 26 OCT and having problems ever since. First I used to get disconnected from internet after every few minutes now the problem has worsened. Now I don’t get disconnected but rather after every 9MB worth data download everything just simply stops. I’m been unable to even update my antivirus because of this problem. Can anyone tell me what’s going on with STC? I mean my brother is using Mobily and he is not facing such problem. How long will it take for the problem to be resolved?

Usama, I GOT THE SAME PROBLEM ALSO. THIS 10mb AUTOMATED CUTOFF! I NOTICED THAT SINCE NOVEMBER 3, 2009 (Tuesday). NOW MY UNLIMITED SUBCRIPTIONS TURNS TO NOTHING! AS OF NOW, 5 DAYS WERE ALREADY WASTED. HOPE THAT THIS WILL BE FIXED SOON !

Just wanna let you know that tonight(9/11/2009) at approximately 10 PM the problem of 10mb automated speed cutoff was rectified. Now there is no such problem and now the speed and everything is working just fine. I’m glad that the problem is solved.

I’m using AFAQ wireless since march.Every month I pay Rs300/- But unfortunately I get very poor service. I am fed up with this service. Im using afaq shamel dsl.4mb,and now wat .it disconnect after every 10 min..i complained more than 20 times but no response.stc is showing no professional touch for its service.they saying use CAT5 or CAT6,and thier STB is open for dust and oxidation.but it worked normal for first 2 months now it real sucking the brain.
my dsl disconnect after every 10 to 15 min and it is painful as no upload no download @ 270SAR/month
i hope stc will get rid of this unprofessional attitude when the competitors teach them and show them their left and right.MOBILY is coming up as a strong competitor and im waiting as the service launch in my area.

Im using the broad band jood plus offer and i have a connection speed of 4 mb same as the images mentioned before and was tested several times on the same website speedtest.net , but the thing is its been like 2 months now acting weird, i cant even open a regular video on youtube like before, i mean whats wrong with them i called and called and now they want to send the technician so he fix that, i dont see any bad connectivity in cables or the phone line is not close to any electrical field and btw i changed from mobily coz it was bad, actually comparing them now together makes u see clearly that mobily was better than stc regarding my conncection…what can we doo about that i have work and i have studies..! Thanx

you’ll see slow speed from usa server. Even 100mbps in usa will show as 10mbps when you’ll try to test a server in saudi arabia. Your dsl is working as it should be. Perfect.

I have the new GO WiMax, I purchased a 1mb Package, and for the last month I have been really happy.
Now for some reason I have the same problem
Speedtest inside the kingdom is great, but all other tests are terrible.
It is the spring holiday here, so I don’t know if over usage or a technical problem is causing this issue.

I think STC needs a good competitor in order for them to wake up a provide their customer a good service. In other less modern countries that I visited they have an amazing speed of internet connection. I just hope that STC will wake up now before all their subscriber move to other ISP.

I’m really NOT happy with the service of STC. So slow. I got Afaqshamel 4 mb and it takes more than 30 seconds for google to load. They sent me a message that the slow speed is due to undersea cable problems but that was an old story.

I was happy with my 512 DSL and 256 Internet from Awwal Net. My bad luck last week I purchased Afaq DSL Shamel with 512. My speed is 16 Kbps. The model is 007. Any solution to increase the speed. Also please let me know how I can secure the wireless connection. Thanks.

I had a 512 kb internet connection which was working fine and I decided to take up the new STC offer and upgraded this to 4 mbs but since last week the internet speed is incredibly slow. I contacted STC and was informed that this is due to the disruption in the internet marine cable but they could not provide day by when the problem will be resolved.
can anyone confirm if they are experiencing the same problem??

I recently bought STC connect. The USB internet in Jubail. The maximum speed that I could get is 20kb/s. Too slow and toooo frustrating!

STC is Extremely vry vry vry SLOW i m using STC Internet unlimited package in Khobar but its speed is too much slow i request to STC plz provide us full speed otherwise all the user of STC Internet will move to other ISP i hope STC will provide full internet speed to common user… if STC not solve our problems we ‘ll move to other ISP…

I am not sure about it. I have seen the behaviour of the local people working in companies like this and they DONT CARE AT ALL. At the top level, where it matters, they may think. But will only think if the number of users (in great number) move to other ISPs.
